FLOAT GUIDELINES

Parade Float Guidelines

General Guidelines

  1.  Safety First: All float designs must prioritize the safety of participants and spectators. Please ensure:

    • No sharp or hazardous materials are used.

    • Proper handrails or supports are included if participants will be standing or moving on the float.

    • Spotters are mandatory: One walker per wheel is required to maintain safety around floats.

  2. Height, Width, and Length Limits:

    • Maximum float height: 13 feet from the ground.

    • Maximum width: 10 feet.

    • Maximum length: 30 feet. Ensure floats can navigate turns and intersections safely.

  3. Fire Safety:

    • All floats must have a fire extinguisher on board.

    • Decorations must be flame-retardant materials.

  4. Themes and Decorations:

    • Floats should align with the parade’s designated theme.

    • Decorations must be securely attached to prevent debris during the parade.

    • Avoid advertisements unless approved through sponsorship agreements.

  5. Participant Behavior:

    • Participants must adhere to family-friendly conduct.

    • Appropriate attire is required for all individuals on or around the float.

    • Throws are allowed only in designated areas to ensure safety. Items must not be thrown in line-up areas.

  6. Judging Criteria:

    • Floats will be judged based on creativity, adherence to the theme, originality, and overall presentation.

    • Ensure all elements of the float are visible and highlighted during the parade.

  7. Vehicle Requirements:

    • Drivers must have a valid license and insurance.

    • Tow vehicles should be decorated to blend with the float design.

    • In compliance with Florida Statute 316.530, all towing vehicles must ensure their trailers are securely attached using safety chains, cables, or other approved devices to prevent detachment during transit.

  8. Music and Sound:

    • Any music or sound effects used must be suitable for all audiences.

    • Keep volume levels reasonable to avoid disrupting other participants.

    • Amplifiers must not interfere with musical units or bands.

  9. Clean-Up Responsibility:

    • All participants are responsible for cleaning up any materials or debris from float assembly areas and along the parade route.

  10. Prohibited Actions:

    • Floats must maintain forward motion at all times. Stopping or counter-motion is prohibited to prevent gaps in the parade flow.

  11. Spotter Responsibilities:

    • Walkers must be positioned near float wheels and prevent participants or spectators from approaching dangerously close.

    • Each float must have one spotter per wheel to monitor and maintain safety around the float.

    • Spotters should not throw items but may hand off beads or trinkets to the crowd.

  12. Krewe Outfits:

    • Krewe members are encouraged to wear vibrant, themed costumes that embody the spirit of the parade.

    • Costumes should feature bold colors, glitter, sequins, and creative designs to capture attention and reflect the parade’s festive energy.

    • Consider incorporating accessories like hats, masks, and props to enhance visual impact.

    • Ensure costumes are practical and safe for movement and weather conditions, while remaining family-friendly and appropriate for all audiences.

    • Cohesive costumes among Krewe members can enhance the overall presentation and create a strong group identity.

  13. Creative Float Suggestions:

    • Use oversized props, such as large sculptures or inflatables, to add dimension and create a dramatic visual impact.

    • Incorporate dynamic elements, such as rotating features, moving parts, or interactive displays, to engage the audience.

    • Bright, eye-catching colors and materials like glitter, metallics, and lights can make your float stand out, especially during evening parades.

    • Include themed backdrops or scenes that align with the parade’s overall concept to immerse viewers in the story of your float.

    • Utilize a mix of textures and layers in your design, such as fabric drapes, painted elements, and three-dimensional embellishments, to add depth and complexity.

    • Weatherproof all decorations and ensure they are securely fastened to prevent damage or loss during the parade.

By adhering to these guidelines, you ensure a safe and enjoyable parade experience for everyone involved. Thank you for your cooperation!
